Fiddler Crab STEM Labs offers activities from a very wide range of engineering and computer science disciplines. Such a broad selection allows families to choose and pursue areas of interest while consistently ensuring rich learning opportunities. A key feature of Fiddler Crab’s approach is the emphasis on problem solving through hands-on engineering challenges that require minimal technology. Most activities are designed to be completed using common items found around the house, making them both accessible and engaging. This low-tech, high-engagement model encourages creativity, critical thinking, and practical application of STEM concepts without the need for expensive equipment or specialized tools. Even more importantly, Fiddler Crab has worked hard to provide flexible options with formats that are suitable for unique scheduling considerations. Activity formats range from quick, single-session explorations to extended learning experiences that dive deeper into core concepts—whether completed individually, collaboratively in a group, or within a cohort of students.
Quick Scuttles can typically be completed in an hour or less. These activities can be standalone or a part of a series of activities in any given course. Regardless, they are designed to fit tight schedules while still maintaining high learning expectations for students.
Deep Dives will usually span at least 3 (1 hour) learning sessions or equivalent timeframe. These projects take the learning to a deeper level. Of course, Deep Dives can also be condensed as necessary if you really like the project but only have a shorter period of time to work with.
Clutch Collabs closely follow the format of a Deep Dive but are meant to be completed as a cohort of students. The projects are often multidisciplinary and have unique project tasks that intertwine can either be completed separately by cohort members or as a group/team.
